How to go on a blissful family Christmas getaway.
  • Purchase 4 Steelers' Tickets from Ticketmaster.
  • Book two rooms at the Wyndham Hotel in walking distance of Heinz Field.  I booked my rooms on Expedia.
  • Book 2 non-stop flights from Orlando to Pittsburgh.
  • Book rental car (only needed if traveling outside of the downtown Pittsburgh area).
  • Purchase Steelers scarfs, hats, and jackets from
  • Surprise your husband with the tickets & the trip for Christmas 12/21-12/24.
  • Pack Terrible Towels, cold weather clothes, & appropriate walking shoes.
Day 1:  Go to Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh for Pretzels & beer cheese, Schnitzel, potato pancakes and bratwurst. Oh and Beer!  After lunch, time for  The Church Brew Works on Liberty.  Have a micro brew flight, a cup of warm apple cider & a glass of pomegranate champagne.  Check into the hotel & check out the views. Rooms on the 21st floor, one overlooking Point Park and Heinz Field, the other city view and a portion of PNC park.  Walk to Market Square, have a drink & a sandwich at Primanti Bros Restaurant, take a  walk around the ice-skating rink (or better yet, go for a skate) and Market Square Christmas Shopping Village. Day 2:  Walk to Market Square to Bruegger's Bagels for breakfast. Drive to The Strip District, park and walk through the crowds and shops picking up some Steelers' T/Shirts and pepperoni bread. Head back to the Hotel to pick up the car and head out of downtown towards Wintersville / Steubenville, OH.  Check out the WWII Honor Roll Mural in Steubenville, eat at Naples Spaghetti House and visit family for great conversation, dessert & coffee.  On the way back to downtown Pittsburgh, stop in Wintersville for some Ray's Pizza.  Then head to East Cason Street, Pittsburgh walk a bit and stop at Fat Head's Saloon. Day 3:  Gear up! It's game day! Walk down to The Market Square, eat breakfast at Cherrie's Diner. Have a couple of mimosas back at the hotel then head to the game at Heinz Field. Take the Gateway T Station to Heinz Field. Hang out in Steeler Country Stage AE Entertainment Complex for music & drinks before the game. (That is if you don't bring a car to tailgate.) Head over to the field, stand in security lines, throw away your metal flask, buy beer, find your seats and enjoy the game! Mid-game, buy nachos, more beer, pretzels and hot dogs! Cheer on those Steelers & wave those Terrible Towels.  Walk back to the hotel. Have dinner at Diamond Market Bar & Grille. Our day game experience ended with a loss, but we still had an awesome time! Day 4:  Pack up, have breakfast at Blue Bird Kitchen, relax, read the paper, walk through the Cultural District, then pick up the car and head to the airport.  Do a little souvenir shopping and head home.  It's been a great trip! One thing I haven't mentioned, hotel parking is a bit expensive. We self parked at the parking garage across from the hotel for $21 a day. (& a little more for Game day).  But being able to drive out to Wintersville & Steubenville, it was worth it. We loved our location, we were able to walk most places (bundled up of course), there were Christmas trees and decorations everywhere, we had snow, experienced a Steeler's football game at Heinz Field and we were all together, the four of us! Rich & I and our two amazing children, we had an wonderful time.
